Remember the first time you heard Yo Majesty’s “Club Action?" You were probably wildly fucked up and found yourself repeating “Fuck dat shit, fuck dat shit,” with lyricist Shunda K while flailing your arms above your head. And, just like their don’t-give-a-damn lyrics, Yo Majesty is doing something that most females in the industry are not able to do...be themselves. The Tampa duo is well known for their homosexuality -- which they deem boastworthy and embrace -- as well as a serious connection to god. The two seem to be a good combination because Shunda K explained god helped her get the pussy she always wanted. Still, Yo Majesty is almost unfairly categorized as hypersexual when they rhyme about snagging ladies in songs like “Kryptonite Pussy,” whereas when men do it, it’s just rap. They deliver it with ease and realness that makes them stand out in a man’s genre. The two are embarking on a US and Eurpoean tour to spread the gospel about their first full-length Futuristically Speaking…Never Be Afraid, one of their most provoking, ass-shaking, worthy albums to date.
two.one.five: What exactly is a Kryptonite Pussy? If I wanted to get one how could I go about doing that?
YM: Its dat fire ass pussy!!! Pray bout it...I did.
two.one.five: You've always been ahead of your time in terms of your sound and delivery, what's next for Yo Majesty, what tricks do you have up your sleeves?
YM: I’m working on my solo project and will be releasing a three-in-one Shunda K series called Her Testimony around April or May. It will consist of my mixtape The Best Eva Written...Outkased, a Shunda K album The Most Wanted...Cause So Many Niggas Fronted, and The Best of Shunda K Acapellas including original productions from some of the finest producers around the world I have had da opportunity of working wit!!! The acapella/production aspect of the project will be for those aspiring producers/artists where I’m thinking of created a competition. So whoever I choose remixes a song the best or whoever created the hottest track to the production I provide will get something special and outside the typical. I’m still trying to put it all together so...I’ll keep ya’ll posted!!!
two.one.five: I know you ladies are spiritually driven, are you also politically vocal?
YM: Music is politics...its all about the truth though!!! Check out "Break Bread" on the Kryptonite Pussy EP. Its track two on da Yo Majesty myspace.
two.one.five: Has it ever bothered you that the press exploits your sexuality or is that something you want people to know about you first and foremost?
YM: I love for people to know upfront about me, but I never push it as an issue cause, like you said, the media makes such a frenzy about it. It’s all good...they jus betta make sure they have all da facts straight from here on out!!!
two.one.five: Do you think the mainstream is ready for Yo Majesty, what do you think it will take to change the publics mind about strong minded female rappers?
YM: Well, I believe what people are mainly wanting is respect; to feel apart of something dat respects and doesn’t discriminate; a place where they can feel da love becasue they have been the outcast too... Da one dat was never supposed to be shit!!! Pretty much, Yo Majesty is jus dat...da ones dat weren't supposed to be shit!!! Look at me now...
two.one.five: Did your Tampa roots influence your sound? Who did you look up to when you first started making music?
YM: Tampa music didn’t influence my sound. You can tell dat when you hear me flow. Dats why I was never appealing to Tampa and niggas they never supported me around here...cause I sound different. So, now I jus gotta keep it movin! I grew up listening to Snoop and Dre, Outkast, 8Ball & MJG, Twista. But, mostly, I have to give credit to myself. I thank God for da abilities dat I have and show my appreciation by decreeing His name!!! Can’t nobody do it like Shunda K. What I bring to Yo Majesty is priceless, it cannot be duplicated or even matched; BY NOBODY IN THE WORLD!!! U aint heard???
two.one.five: What are you most looking forward to on this US/European tour you've got going on?
I’m looking forward to winning over new fans and promoting my solo shit at these afterparties Im trying to set up after each Yo Majesty show worldwide from now on!!! I have a few booked so far. You can go to www.shundak.com to get exact dates. If you can help make something happen, holla bac at cha girl shundak@gmeqca.com.
