Lavalogy

The quote on Hot Lava's MySpace page, “Virginia is for lavas,” terrifically sums up the quirkiness and endearing quality of their songs. Their debut disc, Lavalogy, is a candy-coated confection of mid-'90s, girl-fronted guitar-pop that is so sweet that it may, in fact, rot your teeth. Hot Lava's lead singer and songwriter, Allison Apperson has an impeccable sense of melody and lyric-writing and the band helps her play it up well. It doesn’t get any more quirky or brilliant than their technologically-inspired tunes “Jpg in the Sun” and “Apple+Option+Fire,” which are incredibly timely and oh-so-cleverly written. But that’s not all, kiddies. Songs like the psych-surf sing-a-long “Mummy Beach” and the electro-swirly-pop punch of “Blue Dragon” will make your eyes light up and your ears very thankful. Even the androgynous, rather vulgar “O Retorno Da Lovefoxxx” can’t help but be absolutely adorable. Sure, all your teeth may rot away after a few listens to the sweet sounds of Lavalogy, but you’ll still be smiling. (Pop-Hop)
