Band names are vital. They contextualize music for us, point us to the proper reference points. Had Highland Park-based quartet Bodies of Water come to release this album under their original moniker, A Certain Feeling might sound very different to us. What positions itself as a dustbowl choir, stoically delivering sincerity in the face of black blizzard winds, might seem a little less Biblical had it been released by a band called Unicorn of Death. The group’s gospel and early sixties California-folk influence might come through damaged by the inherent irony, but other elements, namely their oft-mentioned Morricone-love and moments of dusty prog (equal parts ELP, Kyuss and Os Mutantes), would suddenly make more sense. Ultimately, Bodies of Water would have a tougher time playing desert-prophets and Christian mystics, as seems to be their want. One imagines that such posturing helped lend to the totality of synthesis these guys pull off, which is impressive. Anyway, if bands weren’t allowed to change their names, the Grateful Dead and the Velvet Underground would have both been the Warlocks, and that would just be totally confusing. (Secretly Canadian)
