By Stacy Lipson

A grim taste of what our future may hold. Director Joshua Seftel delivers a political satire that hits dead on -- at least for those who have even the slightest interest in politics. Brand Hauser (John Cusack), a ruthless hitman sent from the US to the fictional desert country of Turaqistan (sound familiar?), is hired to kill a high-level oil minister, while also, under the guise of a major PR rep, arrange a huge Turaqistan wedding between airhead pop singer Yonica Babyyeah (Hilary Duff) and Zubleh Taqnufmini (Ned Bellamy), an event so big, journalist Natalie Hegalhuzen (Marisa Tomei) is sent to cover. Cusack fans will be delighted to see him return to a Grosse Pointe Blank-style send up (“Look, we've already kicked the shit out of this place. What are we supposed to do? Turn our backs on all the entrepreneur possibilities?”) Despite the humor, though, there is a strong thread of more serious subjects, somber reminders that the film is, indeed, grounded in political reality. Natalie, for one, objects to the constant bloodshed in Turaqistan, and refuses to engage in the “implanted journalist experience” (a virtual reality ride that mimics an actual battlefield). The film is certainly refreshingly provocative in its commentary about our country's politics; however you may not have the stomach to last all the way through. Chilling battle scenes have a way of catching the laugh in the back of your throat and stamping it down pretty effectively.
