Microcastle

Few bands in indie-rock can create magic on their sophomore album, but don’t tell that to Atlanta’s Deerhunter. On their highly anticipated follow-up to 2006’s Cryptograms, singer Bradford Cox and crew have produced nothing short of a masterpiece. Like floating comfortably above the earth with no fear and no distractions or being reborn in slow-motion, the intro song cuts to “Agoraphobia,” an instant classic about 21st century alienation. As things progress, Microcastle ebbs and flows between melancholic lullabies and introspective dream-pop, drowning your ears in washes of romantic melodies and radiant noise. Some songs are immediate, like the bouncy “Never Stops,” the fragmented title track and the mesmerizing Sonic Youth meets Chrome epic “Nothing Ever Happened,” while others reveal their brilliance upon repeated listens.
In regards to its themes, Microcastle is an opus of dychotemy. Its smallness lies in the length of its songs, while its largeness lies in the weight of Cox’s emotions. In regards to its song craft and overall production, it’s the album of the year. No two ways about it. (Kranky)
