By Rick Sieber

Jaguar Love’s Johnny Whitney wields an untamed beast of a voice: a rabid, chipmunk croak blessed with impressive range and an even more impressive elasticity.  Alternately syrupy and screamy, always weird, it’s definitely the most distinctive (and commented-upon) aspect of this already accomplished Portland threesome’s sound. It also has to hurt. Frenetically supported by the capable rhythmic backing of Jay Clark (drums, bass) and Cody Votolato (guitar, bass), Whitney wriggles and writhes through mouthfuls of ambitiously mythic lyrics (“Georgia’s collecting broken glass and tires, she’s building an airplane from the lonely hearts of liars”) that cast a colorfully trashy -- if occasionally apocalyptic -- take on good ol’ modern American malaise. Maneuvering their tight and punchy indie rock through a variety of tangential genres -- dance punk (“Jaguar Pirates”), metal (“Humans Evolve Into Skyscrapers”), even soul (the rich, organ-coated balladry of the delightful “Georgia”) -- Jaguar Love are true punk mongrels, keeping things mixed up enough to stay interesting without sacrificing the stylistic cohesion that keeps their art punk credentials intact.
