The most basic fact of bipolar disorder is an erratic shift between two principle states of being -- an ecstatic high in which the subject is capable of elevated acts, enormous vaults of energy and impressive levels of cognizance and a devastating low where all is reversed. If the third  album by Mugison seems to support such a prognosis, hold your horses, because he’s European. Icelandic, actually. This helps rationalize sonic fusions that sound like metal covers of Peter Gabriel (“Mugiboogie”) as well as sudden, terrifying dips into cheesier territories (“The Animal”).  Having been called the Icelandic Beck, Mugison’s continental heritage helps explain his embrace of cheese of all sorts. When his rapid turns from orchestration reminiscent of The Wall to filthy hard-rock with fantastic names (“Jesus is a Good Name to Moan”) that frighten you, remind yourself that his pastiche is meant to disorient. Plus, Iceland has relatively low rates of bipolar disorder.  Whether this is due to diets high in fish or their continental tendency to chalk up mental illness to a fundamental human condition is anyone’s guess, but there’s a reason we send our rock-stars there when they feel like pretending to be rock-stars. We were due for one back. (Ipecac)
