By Kyle Hockaday

When we were kids, The Jetson’s gave us hope that one day we’d be living in a futuristic utopia with flying cars and robot servants. These days, our reality seems to be converging with our childhood sci-fi fantasies at a rapid pace. Now, the far-fetched Jetson’s lifestyle that you used to dream of doesn’t seem so far out of reach.

In October 2008, Japanese robotics company Cyberdyne Inc. is going to begin mass-production of a robot suit that assists humans in moving their limbs. Apparently, looking like Storm Trooper can go a pretty long way.

The suit, which the inventors have dubbed HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb), is on par to be the next big thing in power-assistance. It detects bioelectric signals from the brain using sensors placed around the wearer’s body. The suit responds to these signals, analyzes them, and then sets HAL in motion. When HAL is put to work, the wearer can perform tasks that are normally strenuous on the body with great ease – lifting 50 pounds feels like lifting 5 pounds. Sounds crazy, right?

This suit brings a whole new meaning to “I, Robot.” Issac Asimov would be proud of how far we’ve come, successfully meshing imagination with reality. Now, all we need is for someone to invent that dressing capsule thing that the Jetson’s had, and alas, life would finally be sweet.
