Belly Full: Food, Inc.

An Interview with Director Robert Kenner

By Catzie Vilayphonh  |  Send to Friend

I promised a while back after we did a Catz Out The Bag with the 215 staff, we'd get to see what the interns are all about. Now get ready to find out what the unpaid workers get to do on a day-to-day basis.

Jes Sipling, Editorial Intern Lead

1. What are your responsibilities here?
Manage the interns. Do what Piers tells me to do.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
I was finishing my undergrad at Temple and saw Piers speak in one of my classes. I pretty much just told him (aggressively) that I could be the best intern the world has ever seen.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?

Red Bull Cola.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
The internet connection.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?

Smile and beg and you will get what you need.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
I really just look forward to seeing what the new year brings for the magazine. No one project in particular.

Mandy, Editorial

1. What are your responsibilities here?
Putting up events on the calendar, writing for the Belly Full and Human Stain. Along with giving Matt a hard time and drinking Red Bull like water.

2. How did you get started interning for
two.one.five? What were you doing before?
A friend of mine that I write with at Temple News mentioned this magazine and how they were looking for people to write for their Human Stain section. Since I was bummed about not getting the sex/relationships column (that one day I will obtain), I was stoked for the opportunity. Before two.one.five, which I guess you could say this past summer, I was (and still am, but not nearly as much) working at the TGIFriday's in the Philly Airport. It's not as bad as it sounds.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?

My favorite part? I love the content that I write and only wish I could do more, but what I really find enjoyable at two.one.five Magazine is the people. It's a fun atmosphere with fun people ... even Matt. I particularly like his story about throwing pennies at someone. (Wow, that looks like penis)

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
The fact that it turns you into a Red Bull addict.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?
Caffeine is probably one of the worst drugs out there ... and it's legal. No ... well yes, but seriously?

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
Projects at two.one.five? Well, since I'm leaving, that's irrelevant, but I thoroughly enjoyed handing out magazines. It's nice to get such enthusiasm out of the people you meet for something you're a part of. Projects outside of two.one.five ... graduating. It's so close that I can taste it, yet I'm just not there yet.

Scott Yorko, Editorial

1. What are your responsibilities here?

Events page, reviews, Human Stain and Sexuations, research for online and print features, lifting heavy things and office enthusiasm.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
I first got exposed to two.one.five when I moved back home to Philly last spring, saw it in my barber shop, met 500 people who knew Tayyib and just stayed in contact for a few months until they let me be their intern.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?
Exposure to interesting and creative people who probably wouldn't hang out with me otherwise if they didn't have to. Also knowing what's going on around town all the time and getting into sweet shows.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
Towels are kinda scratchy. And Matt made me dig through the trash once.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?

"Even if you're a 37-year-old woman you know nothing about life" –Meegan

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
The opportunity to write something creative and outlandish and delightfully offensive.

Janday Wilson, Editorial

1. What are your responsibilities here?

I have to add events (that I'm usually not old enough to attend) to the calendar. I also do Human Stain stuff; Creampie Lawrence questions, My First and Sexuations. So I have to think about sex a whole lot. (Sidenote: Mom and Dad, if you read this, I have no idea about what I'm writing about. Sex? Pshaw! I just have an overactive imagination!) Lately, the other editorial interns and I have had to look for grants and I've gotten a chance to work on two projects; begging publishers for books and researching neighborhoods that we're canvassing. Essentially, I do whatever Piers, Jes, and Meegan ask me to do. Helping out at events is always fun, too!

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
I saw the magazine chilling at Marbar and I scooped it up. When I saw all of the colors (I'm like a five-year-old) and then the writing I knew I had to apply for an editorial internship, though I had no prior experience. Before that, I was just working and trying to get by in school. And I was originally pre-med and all about science, so this was all new to me. I was not interning anywhere but two.one.five was my first step in exploring my interest in magazine journalism. So I applied and Jes was gracious enough to email me in the summer to inform me that there were openings for interns for the fall.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?

Everyone's laid back and you actually get real responsibilities because there are more interns than staff members. And we are trusted.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
The distance I have to walk to get here. But maybe that's not a bad thing. Burning calories is always good.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?
That if I like to write I shouldn't be afraid to try and make a career of it and be poor, damn it!

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
I want to take the time to pitch ideas for stories and just write a lot more.

Lauren Macaluso. Editorial

1. What are your responsibilities here?

I go to movie screenings and write reviews for the website, I work with other interns on distributing mags, I write for the Belly Full column and add events to the calendar.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
I heard about two.one.five from my journalism class at Temple and went to a Q & A with the staff of the magazine that Ed2010 held on campus. I talked with Piers after the session and pretty much sucked up and said how much I loved his film reviews. I told him film was my main interest with journalism and once I e-mailed him we set up an interview. I started interning in August. Before two.one.five, I was a freshman, so I only focused on school work.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?
Talking movies with Piers when I'm supposed to be adding events. It's actually more like debating movies with Piers but it makes the day more fun. Being able to see movies before they are released, for free, is definitely a big plus, too. It's great interning for this particular mag because of all the connections I have now. The benefits of free concerts and events are another added bonus.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?

Adding events to the calendar, even though sometimes I find pretty awesome bands from looking up local concerts, it's pretty tedious. The commute sucks, but I guess I can say I know SEPTA a little better now.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?

I've learned to be more confident in my writing. Working at two.one.five has taught me that the people in this city are some of the chillest I will ever meet. I'm lucky to be a part of such an important publication to the growth of Philly.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
Since my internship is pretty much over, I look forward to moving on from two.one.five and using what I've learned (especially with writing the film reviews) to develop an even stronger networking base from another publication. I hope I can return to two.one.five throughout the next year to write a few things but my next project is jumping into my magazine sequence classes at Temple.

Herry Pierre-Louis, Editorial

1. What are your responsibilities here?
Our responsibilities range, which is cool because I get to dabble in all aspects of the magazine and the two.one.five brand.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
I learned about two.one.five through one of my journalism professors, and after reading the first issue I knew it was something I wanted to be involved in. Before this I had a work-study job and was going to school full-time.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?
My favorite part of being an intern is the hands on experience. I hear the stories about interns getting coffee and fact checking, but two.one.five interns are given a lot of responsibilities. Sometimes too much.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
I’m not getting paid!

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?
It takes a village to raise a child.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?

I look forward to doing more reviews, whether it is film, DVD, or games. It feels good to sample cool things for free before the general public gets a chance to.

Kyle Hashana-Hutchins Hockaday, Fashion

1. What are your responsibilities here?
So far ... I've been a writer, a contact person for showrooms and designers, a gear reviewer, a gopher, a money collector, a model selector, a Catz assister, a canvasser of the city, a magazine sender, a trade show goer, a brainstormer ... and also a "I'm probably leaving a ton of shit out"-er.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
I came in for what I thought was going to be a long interview, and left with my first assignment. Two days later I was on-site, helping style a photo shoot. Before that day? I was just freelance styling, going to school, and working at lame-ass Armani Exchange.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?
I love the fact that I was thrown right into the swing of things with my first assignment, and it's been non-stop ever since.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a
two.one.five intern?
Umm, my least favorite part? ... when Matt bullies me! Oooh, and I hate going to the post office when mags have to go out. I'm pretty sure the USPS hates me!

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?
I've learned that when people don't tape the bottoms of shoes correctly, you end up having to carry models on your back.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
I'm really looking forward to the revamping of the website -- especially the style section. Also, I'm looking forward to the next fashion editorial, I've been working hard trying to find some sweet stuff for the Spring issue.

Christina Sulpizio, Fashion

1. What are your responsibilities here?
It varies. Since I'm not in the office regularly anymore I am mostly writing gear reviews, helping out with any events, preparing for up-coming features or shoots. I find myself running around the city a lot, too.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?

I started interning this past summer for a school internship and I find my self still here. Basically I just emailed Catzie (the Fashion Director), and it went from there.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?

I think I'll say the photo shoots: picking out clothing, getting to help style the outfits.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
Not getting paid, I would rather quit my job to spend more time here. Oh! And not getting to keep the clothes.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?
Not to step out of your boundaries. My time will come eventually.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
Always looking forward to the next issue and the new website features were working on.

Shavana Green, Fashion

1. What are your responsibilities here?
I do anything and everything the fashion director asks. From delivering packages to assisting model calls to endlessly researching hip new brands and sending out hundreds of emails.  I've also been sent out in search of the "perfect spring roll," yes Puff-Daddy-NY-Cheesecake-style. Thanks Catz.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
I kind of just fell into it. I knew somebody who knew somebody and ended up writing to the fashion director about setting up an interview. I was accepted on the spot. Before two.one.five, I was working two jobs and doing hella side projects. I still am.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?
My favorite part of being an intern is working and knowing that the skills I am acquiring  are really going to heIp me in the future no matter how small my tasks may be. Whether I'm steaming clothing for fashion shoots or meeting with brands at Project in New York I know i'm constantly learning.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a
two.one.five intern?
HTML and delivering packages. Boo!

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?
#1 Don't make Matt Bacine mad. #2 Networking is key.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
Revamping the website and altering the overall "look" (yes, we have a "look") of the mag.

Alexandra Pillion, Fashion

1. What are your responsibilities here?
Pretty much whatever I'm told that they are.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
My dear friend Miss Rachel Nichols hooked me up with an interview and the rest is history. I wasn't doing too much of anything before.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?
Office shenanigans.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
Not making money.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?
Not to take myself too seriously because nobody else does.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?

Revamping the fashion section of the website.

Rachel Nichols (aka Ra Ra, or Ron, depending), Music

1. What are your responsibilities here?

I bother record labels and artists for new albums to be reviewed by myself or other writers in the music department.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
Before interning at two.one.five I prayed every night that I'd be able to write about music and one day those prayers were miraculously answered by Abigail Bruley. She found me doing a sock puppet rendition of My Fair Lady in Old City, she joined in, playing the part of Professor Higgins, and the rest is history.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?

Weirding everyone out.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
Weirding everyone out.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?

Always use spell check

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
The revamping of the two.one.five website and more music coverage.

Brittney Barrett, Music

1. What are your responsibilities here?
I write music reviews and interview bands for Play By Ear. I also find new and interesting things for the media shoots and get perverted for Nine Songs.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?

I was working as a secretary in a meth lab when I went on craigslist during some downtime and saw two.one.five was looking for people to help out in their music department.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?

Interviewing incredible musicians, the money.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
The choreographed dance routines we're forced to learn.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?

I have no future in professional dancing.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
DIY videos, the best and worst artists of the year.

Rajiv Lahens, Marketing/Fashion

1. What are your responsibilities here?
I would like to think that I am here to bring fresh ideas to the table. I attempt to make myself helpful to Tayyib (publisher), Catzie (the fashion director) and Meegan (the marketing director). Other than that I just show up and look cool.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?
I am obsessed with magazines and have a dream of having my own one day. In February of 2008 I was in UBIQ and saw this really cool mag called -- you guessed it -- two.one.five. I emailed everyone and only Catzie responded. The rest is history, pal.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?
Besides the occasional free Red Bull and Vitamin Water, the opportunity to work with the city's dopest publication, along some of the city's coolest people (Tayyib) more than makes up for the fact that I am not monetarily compensated.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?

See above.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?

Hire good people and good things have no choice but to occur.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?
I really look forward to being even 1/37th as cool as Tayyib and breaking this Kanye stigma that has somehow been attached to me. I wonder that it has anything to do with the slim fit jeans?

Kate Conaboy, Marketing

1. What are your responsibilities here?

Heck. Well, I have been spearheading a lot of the tabling initiatives we've started this fall at two.one.five and have been trying to help build the subscription base of the magazine. I have been responsible for organizing and staffing a lot of the other two.one.five interns for various tabling events, canvassing around the city and distribution days from the office. Oh, and driving, driving, driving.

2. How did you get started interning for two.one.five? What were you doing before?

I contacted two.one.five while I was abroad last spring.  I sent over my resume and a letter kissing the mag's ass, ranting about how much I love it and would like to intern for it when I got home.  Once May hit and I returned, I contacted Matt and we had a cute little interview. Taa-dah.  As far as what I was doing before two.one.five? Strolling the streets of Rome taking pics, traveling around Europe cause I could and and drinking ridiculous red wine. And school, I took some classes too.

3. What is your favorite part of being an intern here?
I really like the environment at two.one.five. Everyone works hard, yet manages to stay cool and act natural. Being an intern at two.one.five somewhat welcomes you into a family where everyone looks out for one another. I've experienced a lot of things and have had a lot of fun while interning at the mag, but I guess my favorite part of actually being an intern is getting to say that I work for a really beautiful magazine in a truly cool city. Ohh -- and swiping free stickers is a plus.

4. What is your least favorite part of being a two.one.five intern?
Ahem. Oh just the fact that I don't get paid. And that I drive. And pay $5 to park in the Electric Factory parking lot. And spend money on gas. Ahem.

5. What life lessons have you learned so far?

I have learned many. But I guess I have really learned to step up to the plate and step out of my comfort zone. I'm not really into being in charge or of organizing people (aka telling them what to do), but for this internship I often had to do just that. I have realized that it is important to listen when people speak because you never know what they may say or who they may know. I have also discovered that personal contacts are lovely and hard work definitely pays off.

6. What projects do you look forward to next?

I would definitely like to see the website really take off. I look forward to attributing to that happening, more so in ways of design and working with Mr. Navarro. We shall see.

(In case anyone is interested, we have openings for next semester.)
