What: Picture a piping hot buttery beef patty knockin' boots with a crispy spicy samosa. Precisely dubbed, Dutty Chutney promises to freshly reinvent the culture of carnivale. A unique combination of Caribbean rhythms masterfully mashed up with Punjab's certified floor shaking bhangra bangers ensures gyrating hips and bopping heads will meet their match as Le'tage prepares to spice up their monthly menu with some Dutty Chutney.
Chutney music is a form of music from the southern Caribbean (mostly Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Suriname) which derives elements from soca and Indian filmi (otherwise known as Bollywood) songs. The music was created by Indo-Caribbeans who were transported to the West Indies as indentured servants and then later immigrants, during the 19th century. The chutney lyrics are either in Hindi, Bhojpuri or English on top of beats, usually uptempo, played in rhythms from filmi, calypso and soca to ragga and reggae rocksteady dub.
The word "chutney" itself comes from the Hindi word "chatni-" the term for a sweet and spicy condiment, made up of various ingredients, like fruits and herbs, with spices and other seasoning, a reflection of the mix of musical influences in chutney music.
