 What:   The Philadelphia Museum of Art this summer presents Adventures in Modern Art: The Charles K. Williams II Collection, a major collection of American and European modernist works; includes approximately 100 paintings, sculptures, watercolors, and drawings from the early decades of the 20th century. Several famed artists featured, among them Joseph Stella, Oscar Bluemner, Charles Demuth, and Arthur Dove. On view in the Dorrance Galleries (July 12 - September 13, 2009).

Cage

What:   The now "nicer", "reformed" Cage (from his aggressive Eastern Conference Records days) still used the savagely raw and uncompromising imagery that made Cage a rap legend. But instead of focusing his anger towards others his narratives now showcase everything from watching his father shoot heroin, to his own addictions, stints in mental institutions, and the tumultuous days spent cutting an album for Columbia Records. This hopefully was/is the record to set Def Jux back on the right path after their first 4 standout albums. Much of the production comes from El-P, Central Services, and Blockhead, and all three rub heavy falling-down-stairs drums and glitchworks against gorgeously spacey blankets of synth. It even earned a 8.3 on Pitchfork!

Polvo

What:   First Philly show in like 12 years! One of the most popular and accomplished bands in the arty, noisy indie rock offshoot dubbed math rock, Polvo touched on many of the style's hallmarks: dissonant, intricately layered guitars that often employed alternate tunings; odd, off-kilter rhythms; an emphasis on dense sonic texture; and unorthodox song structures that, nonetheless, were often unconventionally melodic. Additionally, their music had a pronounced Eastern feel that came not only from the Indian and Middle Eastern-style drones in their compositions, but actual Asian instruments as well; that helped set them apart from other post-Sonic Youth/Slint guitar experimentalists.
